Mistake #1: Judging a Cigar by Its Wrapper Color

One of the most common misconceptions in the cigar world is that darker cigars are automatically stronger than lighter cigars.

While a dark Maduro wrapper may look intimidating, wrapper color doesn’t necessarily determine strength.

In reality, the wrapper is only one component of the cigar. The binder, filler blend, fermentation process, and country of origin all play major roles in the final smoking experience.

I’ve smoked Connecticut cigars that delivered more nicotine than certain Maduros, and I’ve smoked dark, oily Maduros that were surprisingly smooth and approachable.

The lesson?

Don’t judge a cigar solely by its appearance.

Some of the best cigars in the world completely defy expectations.

Mistake #2: Storing Cigars Too Wet

This one tends to spark debate.

Many new cigar smokers believe cigars should always be stored at 70% to 72% relative humidity.

The reality is a little more complicated.

While every smoker has personal preferences, storing cigars at excessively high humidity can create issues such as:

• Tight draws
• Uneven burns
• Excessive relights
• Swelling tobacco

Many experienced cigar smokers prefer storing cigars somewhere between 62% and 69% humidity depending on climate, personal preference, and the cigars themselves.

The goal isn’t simply keeping cigars moist.

The goal is helping them smoke properly.

Trust me—there are few things more frustrating than fighting a cigar that refuses to stay lit.

Mistake #3: Chasing Strength Instead of Flavor

Almost every cigar smoker goes through this phase.

You walk into a humidor.

You hear someone mention a “full-strength cigar.”

And suddenly you convince yourself that’s exactly what you need.

The problem?

Strength and flavor are not the same thing.

Some of the most enjoyable cigars I’ve ever smoked weren’t the strongest cigars in the humidor.

They were the most balanced.

Flavor complexity, construction, transitions, and overall enjoyment matter far more than how much nicotine a cigar contains.

Don’t chase strength.

Chase great cigars.

Mistake #4: Buying Full Boxes Before Smoking a Single

I know.

That box looks incredible.

The band is beautiful.

The reviews are outstanding.

The guy on Instagram said it’s life-changing.

Slow down.

One of the easiest ways to waste money in this hobby is buying a full box before you’ve actually smoked the cigar.

Even highly rated cigars aren’t guaranteed to fit your personal preferences.

Try a single.

Then try another.

If you’re still thinking about it a week later, maybe it’s time for the box.

Your humidor—and your wallet—will thank you.

Mistake #5: Ignoring Boutique Cigar Brands

This may be the biggest mistake on the list.

Many new smokers focus exclusively on the largest cigar manufacturers because they’re familiar and easy to find.

While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying established brands, some of the most exciting cigars available today come from boutique manufacturers.

Brands like Espinosa, Black Label Trading Co., Illusione, Aganorsa Leaf, Crowned Heads, and Artesano del Tobacco continue pushing the industry forward through creativity, unique blending philosophies, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Some of the most memorable cigars in my humidor over the years have come from companies many smokers had never heard of before trying them.

Don’t be afraid to explore.

You might discover your next favorite cigar in the process.

If Thor could offer advice to new cigar smokers, I imagine it would be pretty simple:

Don’t judge things too quickly.

The vacuum cleaner might not be evil.

The mailman probably isn’t invading.

And the dark cigar in the corner of the humidor isn’t automatically stronger than everything else on the shelf.

Then again, Thor still hasn’t completely accepted the vacuum situation.
